Hire Car Companies Need to See Your Driving History

When you hire a vehicle with Notts Vehicle Hire we need a copy of your driving license to check that you are allowed to drive the class of vehicle that you have hired and when your license is valid to.

This applies to the primary driver and any additional drivers you nominate to drive the hire vehicle.

For UK drivers we also need a driving license "Check Code" to access the current driving history of each license holder and details of any penalty points.

The code issued by the HM Gov website is valid for up to 21 days and can only be used once, though you can have up to 15 different codes at one time if for instance you are hiring vehicles from different vehicle hire companies over a similar period of time.

Where can I get my driving licence Check Code?

To view or share your driving licence information go to the UK Government website here

What do I need to get my Check Code?

You will need your:

  • Driving licence number
  • National Insurance (NI) number
  • Postcode on your driving licence

What information does a check code show the vehicle hire company?

When you log in to create a share code to pass on to the vehicle hire company you can see all the information that you are passing on which includes the date, description and penalty points accumulated of any endorsements.

It also shows the expiry date of any offence and the date which it will be removed from the record.

In the case of an SP30: Exceeding statutory speed limit on a public road  the record of the offence is removed 1 year after the expiry date. This particular offence expires after three years.

How do I share it with the hire car company?

Send them the share code generated by the UK Government website and the last 8 digits of your driving licence.
